About

I’m a journalist, broadcaster and commentator with a focus on faith, lifestyle and culture.

I write for The Guardian and other media outlets on anything from The Great British Bake Off to burkinis, fashion to dating woes and Ramadan to rock music.

I’m a Pause for Thought contributor at BBC Radio 2 on the Sara Cox Breakfast Show, previously appearing on the Scott Mills Breakfast Show, the Zoe Ball Breakfast show, the Chris Evans Breakfast Show, and Saturday Breakfast with Dermot O’Leary. I’ve also presented BBC Radio 4’s Something Understood exploring themes like the Divine Feminine, Seclusion, and Motherhood across different faiths and traditions using music, prose and poetry.

I present TV reports for BBC One’s Sunday Morning Live; and as a commentator on TV and radio, I’ve appeared on Sky News, ITV and the BBC – often at the crack of dawn when my face is still falling into place.

I’m a podcast presenter for various platforms like the award-winning Things Unseen podcast which centres on moral, spiritual and ethical issues, and Claritas Books Podcast which explores Muslim history, thought and lives. I also chair panel discussions at Bradford Literature Festival with guests including Ruby Wax, classicist Mary Beard, and poet Lemn Sissay, and host events for charities and organisations including the Football Association, Mayor of London’s Eid in the Square, and Ramadan Tent Project.

I was Deputy Editor of emel – a vibrant and glossy British Muslim lifestyle magazine. Since going freelance in 2009, I became Director of Communications for Exploring Islam Foundation which specialises in dynamic PR campaigns and resources on Islam and Muslims across media platforms.

I also watch K-drama and eat chocolate biscuits religiously.

Academic background for anyone wondering: BA in English Literature & Classical Studies, MA in Medieval Studies (yep, I live in the here and now), Royal Holloway, University of London.
